Keep Your Car Safe On The Drive

Thieves are particularly on the lookout for:
  • Signs that the car has a removable Sat Nav as they're often put in the glove box
  • Removable radios and CD's
  • Bags, briefcases or jackets
  • Paperwork for identity theft

Thieves will often break into houses just to get the keys to steal the car.

So please don't leave your keys on a windowsill or on a table just inside a door as this simply makes it too easy for them.

DIY Alarms

Criminals love a house without lights or alarms.  For that reason a home security system will definitely help in making a burglar think twice before breaking in. If you're worried about your house, a burglar alarm can be quite easy to install and Do-It-Yourself intruder alarm kits are less expensive, easy to fit and understand. However, beware of DIY intruder alarms which are very cheap, because they may not be that dependable.  In addition, you may not identify all the risks that a security professional would, so you could still be vulnerable to a determined thief.

Whillst there are fantastic deals out there on quality burglar alarms, don't skimp and purchase a cheap alarm, because your safety is more valuable.

It doesn't cost too much more to bring in a professional such as Falcon Security to install your alarm.

CCTV Installers

We have come across many CCTV installations where money has been wasted.  This is because the installed system has not been designed correctly and doesn't do the job it's needed to do.

This is generally due to:

  • Porr identification of the risk areas
  • Lack of documented design
  • Absence of operational procedures
  • Poor quality installation
  • Lack of operational testing
If installed correctly, CCTV can have a huge benefit, but before spending any money with CCTV installers, ensure they're properly accredited by  the National Security Inspectorate (NSI).

Be Careful Online

You may have heard or read in the news today about criminals using online social media such as Facebook and MySpace to find potential burglary targets.

As part of the sign-up process for many of these social sites, you are asked for your name, address, phone number etc, which can often be made public through these sites.

As part of ongoing communication with networks of 'cyber-friends', people talk about going on holiday for example.  This harmless chat can lead to buglars finding knowing that you're on holiday and armed with your personal details, have a nice target.

Here are a couple of tips to help prevent being a victim of crime through use of online social media sites:

  1. Check your account and remove any detailed address and phone number information.  It's not compulsory to enter it.
  2. To help prevent against identity theft, change your birthday by a day or so.
  3. Be careful what you say when chatting online.  Not all cyber-friends are necessarily so.

Selecting Suitable House Alarms

The cost of buying a house alarm is a factor that most people consider first. And, whilst no two installations are alike even for the same house type, having something rather than nothing will certainly act as a deterrent to would-be burglars.

If cost is a major factor, it would be worth installing a base system that can be added to when appropriate.

House alarms usually have a base system comprising:

  • Central control unit
  • Remote Keypad
  • Door Contacts
  • One or two PIR's (designed to detect movement inside a premises)
  • An External Alarm box

There are then many additional components that can be added to the system including:

  • Glass-break detectors
  • CCTV Monitoring
  • Auto notification to you via Text
  • Auto notification to Police or monitoring station...

...to name a few.

To be fully effective the design needs to take into consideration room type, e.g. does it have many windows, room shape, are there Pets in the house, type of furnishings etc, however please don't let that stop you adding a basic system as a starting point.
